Where science, speed, and strategy come together.
CTN IPGMER/SSKM hospital is where science, speed, and strategy come together to transform healthcare. For over 15 years, we have led the way in clinical research, combining global reach with deep Asia-Pacific expertise and unparalleled local insight to deliver smarter trials and stronger outcomes.
With teams embedded in communities worldwide, we drive faster recruitment, deeper patient engagement, and meaningful results that move medicine forward.
Better Research, Better Results
Clinical research works best when patients come first. That's why we design trials to recruit and engage diverse, representative populations, ensuring outcomes that truly reflect real-world impact. Our global, on-the-ground teams connect with local communities, building trust and clear communication. By applying cultural insights and local expertise, we boost engagement, generate more accurate and complete data, and accelerate study completion.
History of IPGME&R / SSKM Hospital
Way back in 1707, the first hospital in Calcutta was built in the premises of the Old Fort at Gerstein Place. The Council of Fort William constructed this hospital, initially known as Presidency Hospital, built for Europeans in a single-storied building.
In 1768, two houses were purchased in Lower Circular Road to convert into a full-fledged hospital. Located near Presidency Jail, it became known as Presidency General Hospital. Doors were opened to non-European patients from 2nd April 1770.
Presidency General Hospital was best known as PG Hospital until 1954, when it was renamed in independent India as Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial Hospital (SSKM Hospital) to commemorate the great donor Sukhlal Karnani.
From 16th January 1957, the hospital came to be known as The Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (IPGMER), inaugurated by Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the then Prime Minister of India. Since then, the institute has been a Medical Learning Centre of Excellence and a Specialty Hospital.
